I was lucky enough to run into this guy on a morning photo walk in Sabino Canyon.

Taken in Tucson AZ with Canon 7D with 70-200 f/4 IS w/ 1.4x @280mm

ISO 200, f/5.6, 1/400s

Great light, pose, background, and perch. Very sharp with lots of detail. A suggestion would be to make it a horizontal crop so the bird has some more space to look in to.

Very nice for only 280mm. Excellent detail; good exposure; nice perch. I agree with Jim about the horizontal crop.

Excellent detail and pose, and a typical perch for the quail.
Agree about the crop so the bird is not centered and cramped. We're always tempotred to crop closely around the subject to empahsize it, but backing off a bit is usually more esthetic.
Fine image!

Beautiful bird with a nice perch great light. With this BG it should be fairly easy to add some canvas on the left to improve the composition, if you are so inclined.

A lovely image. A great looking bird with a nice background and perch. Sharpness is excellent. Possibly a horizontal crop?
