These birds (along with the Red Crossbills) have been seen in good numbers all across Long Island and from what I understand across the northern states due to an irruption. I had never seen these birds before but was happy to phtoograph a mixed flock of them

Nikon D300s 300 f4 + 1.7X TC HH
f/8
1/800s
ISO 500

Cropped to 67%, minor adjustments in CS5 on 27" iMac

Neat find, Luke. I like the natural setting and the reds in bird and perch. I still don't have any crossbill shots - either species.

Excellent. I'm glad to see the D300s back in the field.

I've been reading about the invasion on the NJ list. I recall when I lived there and one year had a similar invasion of both crossbill species.

Word of the White-winged Crossbill irruption has even reached Alaska, where the spruce cone crop was meager this year after series of good years. Great capture. And glad to see you came through Sandy all right.

Congrats on the new bird and capture Luke! Had the same exact chance last year when a little flock was seen here, first time I'd seen them. Hopefully they'll stick around for you all winter.

Hope everything is getting back to normal on Long Island!!

Love the colors and habitat Luke. Very typical setting for the species and you really nailed the exposure. Nice catchlight. :toast:
