Juvenile Close-Up

This juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron walked up right beside me, as I was kneeling down to get pictures of ducks. He looked as if he wanted something from me. I was shooting in Manual and quickly switched over to Aperture Priority given the low light I was dealing with. This was taken at Lindo Lakes in Lakeside Ca.

Aperture Priority 7.1
Shutter Speed 1/250
ISO 800
Lens Sigma 120-400mm
Focal Length 250
Nikon D300s

Wow, Mike.

This image will forever remind you of this moment in time you have described in your narrative. And that moment, which I can only imagine, is the real subject of the image. I think that the image itself is just a marker, not to say a trivial marker, because it is a great imate in its own right.

The eye is quite crisp, and your explanation of the rest and the softness speaks for itself. The color contrast is amazing.

But, again, it is the context of an image that really gives it meaning, and your narrative makes this one very special to me.

Excellent detail and colours here - I hope this juvie is just curious about you, and has not already learned the lesson of "some humans will feed me."
Sweet image!

Excellent portrait. Sandy, I've noticed the juvenile of this species quite often hasn't learned yet to be wary. I've had them quite close to me, seemingly unafraid.

Very good portrait and nice detail in the partial fledging. Juvie Black-crowns are fearless, even reckless.

Very nice close up portrait and good job reaction to the opportunity. That red eye really draws you into the image and I like the feather detail, way to go.
