Out at sunrise at the local nature preserve to see if the rut is progressing. Foggy morning kept the light low. First of many foggy mornings I'm sure. We had our 2nd rain of the season on Wed. and the grasses are really greening up and growing. That will keep the deer pretty close to the preserve now and will allow them to fatten up. I encountered a number of bucks this morning and thought I'd take you through what I saw in sequence and using the old "Dating Game" format to introduce them. This guy was #1. All by himself. He's a young buck, probably a yearling and probably his first set of antlers. He's sort of a paradox to me. His antlers are not very well developed, even for a yearling, which normally means an inadequate diet. But his body is good size and well filled out. He's in great shape. Maybe it's a genetic thing. But nevertheless, being the new, young guy he probably won't get to breed any of the does this fall. So maybe he's just enjoying the time by himself. I played some with the color balance on this as it's pretty desaturated but even though adding some temp. made it more pleasing, it wasn't what I saw, so left it as is. The photo is full frame and I did nothing to it other than a bit of sharpening. Comments and critiques encouraged and appreciated.

Well done Peter. I actually like this about the best of all of your deer photos you have posted. I like the lower angle, the detail in the deers' coat, his pose, and the overall composition, it might be abit tight on the right side. It is my understanding that if a deer lives long enough, his antlers will start to downgrade, even to the point of becoming spikes again. This guys left ear tip is tattered, so I am wondering if he could be an older deer. Thanks for sharing this very neat image.

Nice shot Peter. Love the misty foggy feel here. I agree it may be a bit skewed to the right in the frame, but is still very pleasing composition overall.

Appreciate the comments. John, I have considered the possibility of this being an older deer and that antlers go downhill after they are past their prime. His body condition is too good for him to be past his prime and my experience at looking at 1000's of white-tailed bucks is that the older guys have smaller and often mishapen antlers but not a retrograde to just a spike. However, I don't have that much experience with black-tails so this is an educated guess on my part.

Hi Peter,

Nice dreamy background to this one - leads to an overall feeling of moodiness which is quite nice. Exposure looks bang on to me and I like that the foreground grasses are nicely in focus. This is a subtle shot but of your recent deer shots it's definitely one of my favourites...

Cheers...
