Trying out my new Canon 5D Mark II. This buck paused at the fence and then jumped it right in front of me. Needless to say, I wasn't prepared for the jump, but I was happy he posed for me before the jump. Comments and critiques welcome.

Nice pose the buck gave you, I like the turned head. The addition of the fence adds a lot of interest for me. Too bad you missed the jump, but I think we can all safely say we missed or share of shots because we didn't anticipate what might happen next.

Hi Jerry, you could have used F5.6 or F4 is this situation which would have given you enough DOF and shutter speed to catch the jump. Keep that in mind for next time and good luck.

Hi Jerry,

I took the liberty of moving this over to the Man & Nature Gallery - the "hand of man" in this instance is a significant element in this image (and not just a "couldn't get it out of the background" sort of thing).

I find the shot interesting and I really like the "feeling" that the eye conveys - almost (to me) like the buck is pondering the significance of the fence. If this were mine I'd probably warm this entire image up just a bit. And, if you're into selective editing, it might be worth experimenting with pulling the exposure of the background back about 1/2 stop - I think it would make a big difference to this shot. But overall quite nice as posted.

Cheers...

Brad,

Took your good advice. I think this is better.

That fence did not hurt this portrait at all. In fact, I think it adds some unique interest to the shot.
As far as exposure goes, somewhere between the original post and the repost would be perfect. I think just a gentle nudge from the original post would do it, especially if you could keep the color balance warm, and keep most of the darkening on the background instead of the buck and fencepost. A keeper, for sure!
