Snow Bunting
by Gary Gulash
I had the pleasurable experience to take a drive in the mountains on Tuesday after a heavy snowfall in the morning. Small flocks of Snow Buntings occasionally flew up along the roadside and with some trial and error I finally found a few that would allow me to get close enough to get some photos of them. They were foraging for seeds from the heads of the dried grasses that poked up through the snow. Their strategy would be to grab the seed head, pull it to the snow, sit on the stem and tear into the seeds. Fun to watch and photograph these delicately colored little wonders of nature.
