Cataract creek

We haven't yet had the winter rains to make this creek run at its fullest, but it was a perfect fall day there today. I found the leaf floating right here...no need for placing a leaf in the perfect spot!

I am wondering if it bothers the viewer that the lower left rock is out of focus?

My tripod was broken so I hand held this shot. Therefore, since it was dark and overcast, the ISO was at 8,000. Is it still too noisy?

Thanks in advance for any comments and critiques.

First off, I really like the flow of your composition here (pardon the pun  ) as the various elements work together well in the scene. I also like the contrast between the green moss and the autumn leaves.

I don't see any significant noise in the image at this size. In the large version, I can see the plane of focus cutting across the rocks in the middle ground, but unfortunately the image does appear soft overall due to what appears to be very narrow DOF. I notice this not only in the foreground rock, but also in the background - especially above the waterfall. I assume that given the circumstances that you describe that you had no choice but to use a wide aperture resulting in the narrow DOF. I think at smaller print sizes this image would still work for you, but this is definitely worth revisiting when you get your tripod fixed and when you can use a smaller aperture for more DOF.

This is a very nice scene and the leaf adds a lot to the comp. Due to the shallow DOF, I would recommend a slight crop off the bottom and a little more off the top, to just below the logs. I really like the strong greens as well.

Kathy, This is a nice scene, and as Brian mentioned it does have a nice flow. I especially like the floating maple leaf. I also agree with the comments and suggestions from both Brian and Rudy.

Others have covered most the nits so I'll just enjoy this pleasant scene. I love the floating leaf and bright moss on the bg rocks
