On Thin Ice

This is an abstract image of air bubbles and cracks in a thin sheet of ice. Goat Rocks Wilderness, Washington, August 2012.

During our recent backpacking trip in the Goat Rocks, there was one night which the temperature dipped below freezing. In the morning, I found this frozen pool of water at the base of one of the melting alpine snowfields. I was originally drawn to the shapes of the bubbles, but as set up the tripod to frame this comp, the cracks in the ice began forming. The bottom of the pool of water was about 10 inches below and also provided some interesting abstract shapes.

TERRIFIC shot... the surface details in the larger version are stunning... reminds me of a painting of Miró... Miró on ice  :toast:

I thought it was to early to see any ice images posted, but I think you get the prize for the earliest! I do like the arrangemnet of cracks and bubbles. Love the large version. the shallow DOF gives a nice mix of sharpness and the forms below. You must have managed to keep your lens in the plane of the ice - it looks pretty sharp on top which is always a challenge for these kinds of shots using a zoom. I might burn down the botom edge a little.

The large version is really a treat to view, Scott. The shapes, textures and lines are simply amazing in this beauty. Great eye to spot this.

Nice. The almost perfect circles are fascinating and the color is perfect. I really like this one

There is so much interest here. The subtle detail under the surface is a real plus, and adds a second level of interest. I'd only suggest burning down the hot areas along the bottom edge.

Excellent. The cracks actually make it even better.

Very nice, Scott, the lines are a great complement (and addition) to the bubbles. I agree with the suggestion to a slight burning in along the bottom.

Ooooh, I just love ice abstract. The detail you captured is superb especially in the large version. Nice combo of intersecting lines and spheres.

You have plenty of landscape here to do some cropping so I would consider chopping off the bottom and some on the sides unless you can darken it some. Overall this is a great abstract. I love the color and the cracks and the bubbles to top it off. Well done Scott!

Man, this is a treat to look at. I know you call it an abstract, but I love the detailed reality of the shot. Excellent as-is, but would also be wonderful cropped to 5x7 or even 4x5.

Very cool abstract Scott. The air bubbles and the texture makes it look like I am looking at some cells through a microscope. Well done!
