Beauty Creek (II)

Taken in Jasper National Park, Canada. Two exposures blended for dynamic range.

The original file is full of detail, which has been lost somewhat due to JPEG compression here (to meet the file size requirement). Check it out here:

Or have a look at the large version.

Nikon D90, Nikon 12-24/4 AF-S DX, tripod.

Basil,

This is a nice image. The blend looks natural without halos or other indicators. To me, the image looks a bit dark yet doesn't seem to have any blacks in it. It just seems a little washed out to me. I think increasing the overall brightness and increasing the blacks would bring it to life a bit more. It depends on what you are going for though.

This is a beautiful scene and you composed it well. The blending looks fine though it has a slight touch of HDR. I agree with Brad that it looks a little bit washed out...but I love it as is.

Thanks for your comments. Please have a look here - a bit more contrast, slightly increased brightness. What do you think?

I prefer the original Basil. I think the repost looks to stark and looses some of the richer colors. I might be tempted to darken the foreground further to bring out the richness of the colors. Just my preference.

I want to drink that water. What a nice image of an exciting place. This is great.

Of the two, I prefer the original. I'm not sure what software you are using. I mostly use Lightroom 4. In LR, I would increase the blacks until it looked rich and natural. HDR blending assumes you want no pure black or whites in the image. I like to see the detail in the shadows that represents what I would see by eye which is generally a bit darker than blending programs give. Adding contrast won't necessarily achieve natural shadows.

Thanks for your comments, everybody! I'll have to experiment a bit - I see Brad's point, but then, I also like the look of the original. Well, well.

Lovely scene, Basil. I really like the color contrast between the rocks and the water. I also like your shutter speed choice for showing the water's motion. I like the original post best, but the forest, especially on the left side seems bright, some burning in on left side may do the trick.

Wow, I missed the title, but thought it looked familiar. I sure enjoyed Beauty Creek during my visit this summer.
