Bison Flats

Most of the time visitors to Grand Teton will come across the resident bison herd, take a few shots and move on but miss the subtle behavior which for me is the best experience of all. Its amazing to see this expansive landscape with a bison herd in the foreground in person, but what I wasn't able to capture were the several bison standing around me. Males with their guttural grunt trying to make an impression with the ladies, the juniors who curiously venture over the check out "the guy with the tripod" and an aging female who lays down to rest as several younger females gather around her licking her head as if to give her comfort. I spent about an hour this morning with the herd and tried to capture what it might be like to be a part of the herd in Grand Teton and with fresh snow on the peaks, wondering what trials they may face in the winter season ahead.

Capture Date: October 20th, 2012
Camera Settings: ISO 100, 28mm @ f/16, 1/60 sec

A beautiful b&w Drew. Love the balance of your comp and way you have controlled the light. Excellent shot.

Great scene. The clouds and lighting are wonderful. Spending time with the animals, especially a herd is always interesting because there is so much subtlety that's missed in a drive by.

Drew,

Wonderful landscape image from Teton NP. Nice of those bison to pose for you.

The only suggestion I have would be to try and boost the whites of the clouds. You've got great tones and contrast in the mountains and grassland, I'm wishing for more contrast and brighter whites in the sky as well to match.
