Preying Mantis Nest 2 was taken with my Canon rebelX DSLR, in the late afternoon with no flash. I was in my back yard, doing some gardening when I noticed it...I grabbed my camera and took the photo.

Holly, welcome to NPN. I was a little perplexed by this as wildlife, as I could not find the wild animal, unless the "stick" that is near vertical on the right hand side of the nest is the mantis!? You may find help with future postings regarding where to categorize an image if you carefully read the information in the drop down menu "posting guidelines" on the top right side of the same page where you have "post a photo."

Regarding the image, if the subject is indeed a mantis I am not seeing, the camo is too good for this viewer. If your subject is the mantis nest alone, then perhaps a closer view is indicated. If you are showing the nest with its nature surroundings as the general subject, then I think you have generally succeeded in giving us a good sense of a natural place. Technically, your exposure and perspective have allowed some background highlights on some leaves and stems to become overexposed, turning them into bright hot spots that draw the eye away from you subject matter. A lower exposure during shooting would be the first step in reducing hot spots or a different perspective to carefully avoid those brighter zones.

Thanks for sharing your work and I look forward to seeing more. In many cases, considering this is foremost a critique gallery, a larger version of the capture will enable viewers to better appreciate detail of your work and better offer you constructive feedback. And please, jump in and offer observations on the submissions of others...it is what makes NPN a vital place!

I've never seen a mantid nest before. Or I might have seen it, but just didn't realize what it was..
