I assume the object under the spider is its most recent victim, but I would appreciate any other ideas. I used a Tamron 70-300 VC, f/11, 1/320, ISO 200, 70mm and either 52mm or 65mm of extension tubes, ~75% of original image. Any suggestions on the species of spider (taken in central Kansas)?

Rob, this looks like a goldenrod spider, a member of the crab spider family. I agree that the bug is it's latest victim.
Nice image, although I wish the flower was in better shape! You might clean up some of the dark areas and rips, if you wish to.

Graphic but interesting image, Rob, because of what looks like a body part under the defiant looking spider, and the worn look of the flower. The detail of the spider is excellent. I am wondering what a black and white conversion would look like.

I concur with Sandy on the species. Very nice capture and good comp. I like the detail and contrast you have with this image. :toast:

Sandy, thanks for the ID, and the suggestion to fix the flower. I am going to leave the worn condition for the moment, but may fix some of the spots if I rework this image.

scott, here is a b/w version. I don't like it as well, but I will post it for you and others to see/comment on.

Rob:
I like this environmental 'as it is' shot with the worn petal, carcass and spider defending its tuft.

I like the classic pose and POV, nice details Rob.
As far as the crab spider prey? Hard to tell. My guess is a small inchworm/caterpillar of some sort?
Well done:toast:
