Hardscrabble Farewell
by Michael Hardeman
I spent a lot of this season just photographing on Hardscrabble, which is 4 miles from my house. Unbelievable access for a guy who used to get to photograph aspens maybe once every couple of years, and usually for about 2 or 3 days.
I had been all over this mountain, picking out different groves for weeks. It was after a session that I found myself poking around and found this composition of trees against a red rock cliff, covered with reddish brush.
I shot several digital shots after I managed to get 3 8x10 film images before the wind started blowing at dawn on Wednesday. I shot 2 images at f90 with the 8x10 and 1 at f128. The f-90 shots were 45 second exposures on Velvia. I went back yesterday morning, and after a full day of wind, most of these leaves were gone. Hopefully, I got the shot on film.
