Emerald Pool

Just returned from my honeymoon in Dominica - this waterfall was the easiest to photograph for a variety of reasons. In absence of using my tripod (which was back at the hotel) I opted to rest the camera on a large rock and utilize the timer feature.

Nikon D300s 18-200mm VR @ 200mm
f/25
.5 seconds
ISO 800

Nearly full frame, just chopped a tiny bit off the bottom. Adjustments in ACR in CS5 on 27" iMac

I like the color and light in this, and the shutter speed feels right for the flow of water, but the comp feels unbalanced. The falls are too close to the left side. I don't know what was out of frame to the left side to prevent you from including more there. I would prefer the falls to be centered. I understand the allure of the nice green leaves emerging from the dark on the right side, but you could also crop to just to the right of the brighter leaves and it balances better.

Luke, I actually like this as is. I suspect an item that might be in question with the offset of the waterfall, a good idea IMO, however, the dark area to the right might be what makes it seem a bit off balance. But there is not much that can be done with all these deep shadows and one just has to take the nice scene as it's presented. You might give the cropping idea that Morris recommends for another look see...

Luke, I do like the exposure on the water... something about the very dark right is taking my eye away from it IMO, whether it's the comp or the darkness. Hmmmm.
