Hummingbird

I was photographing flowers last weekend when I spotted this hummingbird. He(or she)stayed still just long enough for me to take a few photos, then flew away. This was the one I liked best.

Canon Xti, 70-300 IS lens @ 300mm, f/20, 1/125 sec., ISO 400.

Well exposed and excellent detail. You probably could have gotten by with a larger opening for less DOF (more blurring in the BG), but this is quite good, and I am second guessing, LOL!

Beautiful iridescence. This is amazingly sharp-especially given 1/125s. I like that pop of color in the flower.

Very nice, I like the detail you captured in the hummers feathers and face. Good colors also. Thanks for sharing.

Awesome reflections off of the feathers and the background colors are pleasing as well. Nice to get this with just a 300mm

Nice detail and the iridescent shine really adds to the image, way to go.

I like this a lot, as presented. Sharpness and colors appeal to me and it doesn't have that "set-up look". In this situation I think the squarish crop works well.

Lovely, Bar. I agree with you choice of DOF; for me the flowers add a lot to the shot. Fine work on the iridescence. I'm not very good at hummingbird ID – there's not a lot of opportunity in Alaska – but is this a female Ruby-throated?

Sorry, Jim, I don't know the ID. From pictures I've seen online, it looks like it could be a female Ruby-throated and I read that they would be in this part of the country at this time of year before migrating south for the winter.

Excellent detail in the bird and a fine pose. Love the colorful background and might consider blending/softening it some more, while leaving the tantalizing orange flower as is? Just a thought.
