Neotropic Cormorant (Phalacrocorax brasilianus)

Place: Gilbert Water Ranch, AZ
Date: May 20, 2012 8:22 am
Equipment: Nikon D300, Nikkor AF-S 300/2.8 & TC20E (2x), G1325, RRS BH-55, Sidekick
Exposure: ISO 800, Aperture priority matrix metered, 1/800th @ f/10
Raw, PS CS3 on Mac, 87% of frame

Multiple subjects always give me problems. I couldn't manage enough DOF for these three cormorants but I like the arrangement and the individual poses.

Honest critiques requested; all comments appreciated. Please base critiques on the larger version if possible.

The two near ones are sharp, anyway. I like the poses and the feeling of depth in the cormorants' bodies.

Wonderful handling of exposure, beautiful feather detail, and I, too, like the poses, especially the one with the open mouth.

To me this picture shows lots of personality. The bird in the middle looks to be the bossy one trying to be in charge so it is appropriate he is in focus. . .and closest to the camera. I don't mind the one more OOF bird; in fact I think it helps highlight that the bossy one trying to steal the show! I like the feather fluff stuck in the other guys beak.

Delightful image Rich.
Good use of the strong directional light with nice detail on the nearest two..
I like this set of three, great interest with the loud mouth taking center stage

Richard, I know what you mean about dof and multiple subjects. Sometimes, having one oof is not that big a deal. Kind of a subjective thing. For me, having the 2 in focus and the other guy out there doing his thing does not look bad. It seems like you were dealing with tough lighting though there is still good detail on the birds. Like their poses! How's that for a neutral critique? LOL
