Willow Flycatcher (Empidonax traillii)

Place: Boyce Thompson Arboretum, Superior, AZ
Date: September 18, 2012 9:09 am
Equipment: Nikon D300, Nikkor AF-S 300/2.8, TC20E III (2x), G1325, RRS BH-55, Sidekick
Exposure: ISO 800, Aperture priority spot metered, 1/125th @ f/8
Raw, PS CS3 on a Mac. 42% of frame
No cloning, no noise reduction

When I lived in NJ I relied on vocalization of empid flycatchers to make my identifications, and that is still the safest way to tell them apart. But here in AZ I see them almost exclusively as silent migrants and I list them simply as “empid species.”

This bird is obviously a flycatcher from size, structure, and behavior. It is an empid from overall yellow-green color and two tone bill (dark above yellow-orange below) and the pair of wing-bars. Based further on the buffy-yellow color of the wing-bars and the very minimal eye-ring I believe this is a Willow Flycatcher. But I’ll certainly listen to reasoned analysis why it might be something else. (There are two ventral views of this bird on my blog.)

The tech as always spot on but his background is very, very special sweet. Maybe a bit of brightness off the llf leaves.

Another wow photo. Beautiful the way the background and leaves compliment the bird.

Richard, I think one of your best. I do not see any objectionable noise issues; only a minor amount in the dark gray feathers. Even more exceptional getting this good in 42% of the frame.

I certainly would rely on your call on the ID if this were mine. Beautiful work and workmanship. :toast:

I really like this. The greens and the background make this special.

Richard, this is sweet. I would be tempted to run a small content aware brush over the twig covering the wing.

Nice light, beautiful detail on the bird and a really different gray bg. There are just enough twigs in this to show us a hint of habitat, but not so much as to be overwhelming. Shame about the one twig across the bird, but this is still very, very nice. I think your guess as to a a Willow FC is a good one. (If they're silent there, maybe you could teach them sign language ) Sharon

Rich, I think this is a stunning image. I love the soft palette, the pose of the bird, the eye contact and the setting. I'm terrible at empid ID so I can't help with that. Just wanted you to know how much I enjoy this image.

I really like the flow and composition of this image. Simple, yet effective. The branches all work together well to keep me in the photograph. Colors are very nice as well. I would only consider burning a couple of the brighter green leaves to keep them from drawing quite as much attention as they do. A very nice image! :toast:

I have looked at this photo a few times and every time I look it grows on me more and more. I really like the flycatcher's pose, but I think the delicate branches with the couple leaves are great.

Sweet photo Richard!!!

Lovely image Richard. I like all the swirls of the twigs and the bits of leaves in the background.

Great job of making him pop with a busy setting Richard. Nice piece of processing as well. I especially like the color palette.

Interesting to read about this on your blog and look for the marks you are describing in my bird books. If that one branch would of not been going over the back (how many times have we said that when photographing birds!) this would of been just about perfect. Still a very nice job of getting this shot and your choice of composition.

It's amazing to me how you so often get birds in settings that match them so perfectly, and that's the case here, too. This is such a delicate image, and the twigs seem just right for this bird. Beautiful detail, great pose also, as always.
