Practicing?
by Peter Cross
Been away for a couple of weeks in the Olympic Mtns and San Juan Is. of Washington. Lots of photos but not many keepers due to lousy atmospheric conditions: Haze and smoke. I'll post a few though. Went to the nature preserve to see if things had changed since I last visited. Must say that they have. Black-tailed deer are much more numerous on the preserve now which indicates fall and the rut are coming soon. This fawn looked like he was practicing his regal pose for when he grows up. Not a super composition but it does show a deer in mid-shed of its summer coat. The shoulder and hip area of the fawn clearly shows a few remaining spots and the lighter tan fur. The neck shows the much more gray fur which is growing in. Definitely an in-between seasons deer. Saw a few bucks which had clearly shed their velvet while I was away. So I missed chances for dried out velvet hanging from the antlers. Got a very distant shot of a buck with a large reck which may have been my buddy Barney. I'm sure I'll see him again. Comments and critiques are welcomed and appreciated.

4 commentsNice subject giving you a nice pose. Between the lighting (specifically the lack of direct light on the subject) and the deer's proximity to the background the subject does fade into the background a little too much for my taste. And, unfortunately, the head blends in the most.
Cheers...thanks for sharing this...

Your "home range" is a beautiful and bountiful place. Nothing better than having a territory where you know every tree and rock, to say nothing of having inhabitants you can recognize as individuals.
