Olympic Marmot

My son and I hiked a bit in the alpine country of Olympic National park in July. We found a small group of Olympic Marmots hanging out in this rock formation. As I approached them for some close-up portraits they dis-appeared into the rocks. While looking around I thought this would make a nice lanscape image. While I was shooting the landscape this marmot appreared for a look, to see what I was up to.

Canon MkIV, 24-105mm @28mm, 1/80, f16, ISO 100, manual spot meter, mirror lifted and cable release

All your comments and suggestions are very much appreciated

Nice photo Ken. I like the way the marmot inject itself into the scenic photo! I think it would have been better if it was turned the other way, but you take what you can get! Thanks for sharing. Wish I had been there.

Ken, I like this landscape, nice clouds and the Marmot adds to it against that white background. Just a great shot. I would like to see the landscape without the Marmot because in a way the Marmot is a bit of a distraction from the landscape. Both would be quality photos IMO :wavey:

I love the grandness of the vista here Ken :toast:
Including the marmot was great IMHO...if it was just a landscape it would not be posted in the Wildlife forum
I might try a luminosity mask to punch through the haziness in the background...

Now that is an animalscape Ken! Very nice work. Personally I would be interested in seeing this a little more space to the left traded in for some on the right; that would perfect the overall comp IMO.

Hi Guys, thanks for your encouraging comments on this photo.

Jack, Olympic National Park has many trails to explore, from day hikes to multi-day hikes. Including many in the apline habitat. A truly wondrous place to spend some time.

I am a sucker for these 'subject-small-in-the-frame' images. The environment, by itself, is a strong image, and the addition of the marmot is just the icing on the cake. :toast:
