In the Eye of a Caribou

While visiting Fairbanks I went to a research facility studying the biology of Caribou. The Caribou are kept in this large pen and this individual guy came over to see who we were - apparently they identify others by the smell of their breath. I took this photograph while he was smelling the breath of my colleague and you can see him on one side and me with my 300mm lens in the center of the eye. Fascinating animals and very plastic in their behavior and response.

Unusual perspective. Nicely taken. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Peter, this is a very eye-catching close-up I must say. The fact that you had blue sky with puffy white clouds helps a lot (only that photographer's reflection is a bit distracting  ). I am only left wondering why you decided to shoot this wide open; more DOF woul have improved the image IMO.

I just love the Caribou eye environmental portrait of yours !
I agree with Vincent, stoping down aperture would have enhanced the effect.

Vincent and Jagdeep - thank you very much for your comments - truly helpful. In truth I had not thought about the DOF within the eye reflection but I like the idea of the reflection and will work on this with other animals if I can and now take your advice.
