Orange Blooms I

Orange Blooms, October 1st 2010

Minor brightness and Contrast adjustments.

Panasonic DMC-TZ3
Focal Length 19.5mm
Shutter Speed 1/250 sec
Aperture f/4.7
ISO/Film 100

I was asked to post the camera settings, for my photos. I could not afford an expensive camera body and macro equipment, so I built an attachment for my camera, that included cardboard tubing and lots of duct tape. The above settings, may or may not make any sense since the attachment changes just about everything. :)

Stephen:
The composition is fine and the bloom looks great. The bg however looks a little busy and the brighter bg isa little distracting.

I think the small sensor size and the relatively small aperture in PnS camera tends to limit what you can do in this situation. I have read your forum post about using a PnS. The camera is just a tool in photography and I agree with you that the person behind the camera is more important. Knowing the limitation of your gear helps as well. Folks here don't care much about what gear is used in the image capture but like to know the technicals as these help in the critiques and learning process. I don't think there is discrimination against PnS cameras. In fact, there are images here that are not even taken with a camera eg scanner and x-ray that still get lots of critiques.

Hi Gary,

The technical info, for each shot, would not make sense because of the attachment I made for the camera. The EXIF data, does not support the image and would confuse people. The DOF, you see in this image and in my other photos, are not normally possible, with a P&S camera. At least not the type I was using. Some of the newer, more advanced P&S, on the market now would probably be able to do this.

Gary,

My camera, and setup, was stolen this past summer. I am now looking to go into a true DSLR and learn how to take images the right way. That is why I came here. I have been told that my composition is pleasing, but that my photos, lack in image quality. I am hoping to change that. :)

Thanks for all your feedback!

I like this composition Stephen but would like to see the whole bloom in this case. Just me and my untrained eye. I also came to NPN to learn, and it has been a blessing to me. The folks here are wonderful, and have helped me to the point of my work getting hung in a gallery. Once again welcome to the finest in my opinion.

I like this a lot, Stephen. A bouquet of frame filling beautiful colors. The bg is certainly busy but works pretty well because it is filled 100% with color, most softer and more subdued than the main subject. The light pink area above the subject is bright, and you could darken this area. My other suggestion would to brighten the main flower, especially the center, as the lighting on it looks a little flat. These are minor tweaks. :wavey:

Stephen - Love the sharp focus square on the center of the flower !!. If you could selectively darken the background a bit more (or better still use a diffuser to soften the light at the time of shoot) and increase the brightness of the main flower it would really look better.

Thank you for the lighting suggestions. A diffuser would not work, on my camera, as it is a built in flash :) 95% of the time, I am working with natural light. Very rarely, do I use the flash.

I will have to do some research, to figure out, how to selectively brighten or darken in PS. Normally I brighten or darken the entire image, at one time.

Thanks again :)
