Coffee "To-Go"

All too ferquently, our garbage ends up - well, anywhere.

July 2009: These pelicans were on the Bow River, in Calgary AB... hanging out near the weir - a structure which had created an artificial fishing 'buffet' for them. The weir has recently been re-engineered and the pelicans no longer hang out.

Their fishing technique was basically lunge at any object in the water. When one of the pelicans would catch (or appear to catch) a fish, there would be a scrum for the prize.

** The larger photo shows one of these scrums **

In this little battle, the prize was a 'to-go' coffee cup. Luckily, the victor didn't swallow the cup, but what a lot of energy wasted over a piece of garbage, and the potential health risks had the pelican actually consumed the cup.

both images are just fabulous, Karen! The large image depicts the "scrum" perfectly-- exactly what it looks like! Pretty rough life if that's what you have to go through to get a meal for yourself. And your smaller image-- what a sad story about humanity. I wish people had more appreciation of how their actions affect others, both human and wildlife.
