Chisos Mountains

by Bill Chambers

Gallery: LandscapePosted August 29, 2012328 views17 comments
I shot this about 6 years ago and am just getting around to processing it (talk about procrastination!). Shows the snow covered Chisos Mountains taken from the desert floor. It doesn't snow that often in Big Bend National Park, but I've been fortunate enought to catch snow 3-4 times in my trips there. Single exposure.

Larger version for better details.

D2x w/28-70 @ 42mm
1/60 @ f/11 - MLU and mc-30 remote release
100 ISO
No filters (that I recall)
Tripod
Captur One 6, CS4. TK's magic

I would love to hear your honest thoughts. Thanks for looking.

Great to see a great image from this location. I'm ashamed to say that although I live in Texas I have never been here - I need to add it to my ever growing list of places to see and photograph. I really like seeing desert scenes with snow so I'm instantly drawn to this. But beyond that I enjoy the great composition and light as well. Those clouds are also add a lot to the scene. :toast:

Bill, this one is reaching back in my memory bank here. I can recall at least one of your trips there and postings from that trip, but it also seems like you had a similar look from this almost same location from back then. Maybe not, but it looks a bit familiar to me.
Regardless, great to see this post from a very under shot and posted location that being Big Bend NP. I like the stream bed leading us to it's primary source the snow topped mountain. Color and detail in the larger version work nicely too.

I too am glad to see an image from this location Bill! I don't often see images of the Chisos or the canyons of Big Bend.

As far as the shot, I would want to see less foreground and more mountain, but still very nice!

I love the crisp clarity in this shot Bill... tremendous processing. Really like the reds of the rock in contrast to the blue/cyan sky. Those bg mountains are beautiful with the white snow and clouds. I quite like what looks like a dry creek bed leading line. I guess it may run after heavy rain? Great comp. No nits, just really enjoying this shot.
Oh... there maybe a dust bunny in the top right sky?

Great sense of depth here, especially in the large version where one can take in those textures.

Very nice Bill. The large version is especially nice to look at. The color looks great and I love the depth this has. The distant mountains and clouds look great against the beautiful blue sky. :toast:

Love the rich earth tones, interesting textures, snow capped peaks, cloud cap, and blue sky to compliment it all. Excellent comp, too. Looks a wee bit soft along the bottom, but the mountains are such a strong element, that really doesn't matter to me. Thanks for posting something from here, as I've never seen them.

Thanks all for the comments.

Paul, you probably remember the horizontal image I had from this shoot - same scene but without the wash lead in.

I like your using the canyon as a leading line to the beautiful snow capped mountains. The clouds are fantastic.

It takes a really good eye to consistently edit images to this level of perfection. From comp through computer, you really do these well. Except maybe for that bit of sensor scum in the URC. Maybe it's just the jpeg.

Very nice image Bill. The snow and cloud capped mountains really make this a good one. I wish there was a bit of water running down the drainage, but I imagine that only happens during really heavy rain.
