This male came so close I could smell him and even hear him breathing. This image is full frame and he looks kinda intimidating when looking through the viewfinder.

Nikon D4 - Nikon 500/4 VR
iso 200 1/3200s. f/4 almost full frame

An interesting close up portrait with the 500 lens, this is really different but with the eye contact and fur detail this is a very intriguing image, well done.

edwin - the thumbnail is doing you no favours here (but being stubborn, i opened it because of the thumb ... so maybe that's your tactic?! the light in the eye is perfect! super.

Stuart's comment is right on. I had no idea what was going on in the thumb, but this is fantastic. The textures are so fabulous, I wonder if cropping slightly from the bottom (removing the darker texture-less area) would enhance it even more.

Hi Edwin,

While I find this shot interesting, if I'm being honest it isn't my absolute favourite of your shots (so many of which are just excellent). I like the textures and the eye is excellent (especially in the larger version), but I think the dark out-of-focus area just above the nose (and the nose) are distracting me a bit. But based on what I'm reading above I think my view is not shared by others and overall the shot is being very well received!

Cheers and thanks for sharing this...

Edwin, I think the soft light in this is really super personally. I like the angle of capture and the intimacy. I understand Brad's critique, but I am fine with the nose and area above it. My only nit is the very lower part of the image that is blurred. I don't think it adds anything (even depth...because you already create it with the inclusion of the nose). IMO, if you cropped this to an 8x10 and lose that low OOF area, I think it might make this even stronger than it already is.
