Moon Rise Sun Point

Just back from a week at Glacier NP. The bluebird skies weren't great for sunrise and sunset, but did give us the opportunity for some night photography. Unfortunately, later in the week, the skies were much too hazy from the smoke of wildfires to take advantage of the Perseid meteor shower. This was taken at Sun Point, overlooking St. Mary Lake. The orange glow at the horizon is from the rising moon.

Canon 5D3. 16-35/2.8 @ 25 mm. Four 10 sec exposures for the light painted foreground, taken at ISO 400, f/8. Stars and background are at ISO 3200, f/2.8, 15 sec. See LARGER VERSION for best detail

Painting with light really makes those trees pop, and that sky is a perfect background. Love it!

Very effective use of light painting! The night sky is a great backdrop.

Really great subject for light painting against the night sky Doug. Nice job with the blending. It feels like the painting on the trees is perhaps a little strong, and I could see cropping about half the sky away since there's not much variation going on up there. Love the orange moon glow on the horizon.

Spectacular! The shape of the trees is great but the light balance between the painted trees and the sky is amazing.

Very nice. I like the detail the light added to the tree and the soft warm glow this image has.

Excellent image Doug. Love the moon rising glow and you've done a great job with the painting and comp. I would prefer a crop from the top.

Nice shot Doug. a slight crop from the top might improve it slightly but a real beauty as presented. :toast:

I like it. Very nice light painting work, although I prefer to see a slightly darker tree.

Its been tough getting good skies lately in our neck of the woods. I don't know about you but I'm tired of the smoke. Clear skies do make good for stars though. This looks real nice Doug and i like that little bit of orange glow on the horizon. Contrast nicely with the blues. Great exposure and those twisted trees sure add character. Nice work!
