West Desert Mustang

West Desert Utah, Simpson Mt. Mustang at sunset.

I set up for a sunset shot and managed to get this mustang between the setting sun and me. I like the vegetation and like how it draws my eye to the sunset..... For me this was a tricky shot with competing EV values working against each other.... The brightest part of the sunset is blown just a bit, the mustang is (for me) just a bit too dark, and the yellow (reflective cheat grass) is pixilated given the AV setting I used in trying to pull this off…. I have been pushing the Robbie Photo-envelope reading everything I can for information and knowledge and set out to get this exact picture. It is rewarding to have created something that I had envisioned in my head in advance. I am undecided how much I like this shot (actually what I captured) but I LOVE the comp and spending time in this very remote location.

Canon 1Dm4, ISO 400, f22, 1.250th, 98mm (shot with a 70-200 lens). Post processing included slight exposure adjustment, pre and post sharpening, and a touch of the vibrance slider to bring out some light on the mountaintop....

have at it and let me know what you think and thanks in advance for your time.

Nice image! I saw my first wild horses this July, and I hope to get some pictures sometime soon.

Very sweet animalscape. I realy like how you've composed this, and the panoramic format works well. Good shot! :toast:

Perhaps you are right that it is not technically perfect, but it sure is a beautiful image! Sometimes the feeling of an image outruns any technical flaws, and I believe that is the case with this one!

The composition works nicely and I really like the running pose of the horse, emphasizing the sense of motion.

The more I look at this one the more it grows on me. I really like the pano crop and the action of the horse.
