Clear Lake Morning

by Wick Smith

Gallery: LandscapePosted July 30, 2012387 views18 comments
This was taken about 20 minutes after the sun peaked over the ridge at Clear Lake in the San Juan Mtns of Colorado. The clouds were not our friend this morning as the sun peaked in and out for just a little while at sunrise, so we didn't get the peaks on fire like we had hoped.

We made lemonade from the circumstances.

5DIII, 24mm T/SE - three shot pano shooting vertical & shifting lens. ISO-100, f18, 4/10 second.

Please view large for much more detail. The original ended up 7500 x 5300 pixels - love the detail with this type of pano.

The shaft of light makes this work really well. Excellent comp, reflection, clarity, and beautiful color. Wonderful image! :toast:

I've been to Clear Lake and as beautiful as it is, it's not all that easy to photograph. This is one of the nicest images I've seen from here. I actually prefer the strip of storm light you've got over the rosy peaks, which is much more common. Perfect processing, too.

Wick, I like this very much. I think maybe you could sharpen it just slightly for the web, and it might make for a better presentation.

Wick, This is really nice! Some wonderful light and the colors are beautiful. That light just above the shadow looks great and then showing again in the wonderful reflection. I like your comp very much as well. The large version looks fantastic. Nice work, Wick!

This is more interesting in a lot of ways than another photograph of glowing summits. I like it a lot, but it looks like the sky could use some work. There are some funny looking colors, but I don't know whether details can be rescued at this point.

Wick, your image conveys the serenity of this majestic scene wonderfully to me. The foreground elements add a lot for me, leading into the composition in an appealing way. I admire the amazing dynamics within the otherwise static scene. Great work to my eye.

Wonderful scene with the glass like reflection and ray of light along the mountain side, the larger image detail looks very good, way to go.

Wow, this looks inviting! Great looking stitch and exposure. I might actually consider a crop off the right 4 x 5 ish to keep more of the eye to the left lighting. Very nice work.

Love the non-sky portion of this. The colors and elements, and their placement really sing. Sky seems . . . a bit off.

That's very pretty, Wick. Nice composition and light. You got some clouds even if they didn't light up for you - the strip of light makes up for that.
