Delicate Arch Window

Delicate Arch at about 11 pm. If you've shot from this angle before, you know its a fairly severe slope into a significant drop off. I was perched there clinging by my fingernails. This is a two shot image, one for the stars and one light painting of the arch.

Please view large for a more detailed version.

Canon 5DIII, Nikkor 14-24 lens
Stars - 25 seconds, F4, ISO 2000
Arch - 30 seconds, F4, ISO 1250

Nice balance between the lighting on the arch and the starry sky. Sure gives a feeling for the immensity of the universe.

This looks very well done to me. I'm rather baffled by the lack of feedback so far considering the number of views. Regardless, you have quite a fine image here.

I like the contrast of colors, the comp, and the light. Still, there is a bit of feel of unreality to this. I think it is sometimes hard to connect the stars to terrestrial objects and separation is always a potential problem.

Wow this is nice. Love the sky here and how the meat of the milky way fills the arch. Gotta view the large version to really appreciate this.

Cool shot, love how the arch frames the milky way. I might crop slightly from the right for less of a centered presentation.

The large view is a must see to appreciate all the detail here. I like the exposure and your light painting efforts too Wick.

I like that you didn't over-do the light painting, as most tend to do - exposure-wise, I'd say everything is perfect here. Very nice work on the blend as well. However, I'd still prefer to see the light source be from behind or from the side, to bring out some of the texture of the arch. I understand that you couldn't do that without a timer/intervalometer though, which you may not have had.

Might I suggest for your star exposure: warming up the white balance? As it is, it's so cool that even the Milky Way is cast in blue. You can warm it up to the point where the sky is blue but the Milky's red/magenta hues come out, thus giving it better separation from the rest of the sky.. I believe around 4200K is where this happens.

Despite my nitpicking, still very nice.

Wick,

Excellent job with everything - the light painting, sky exposure, blend, etc. I've never been there, but your description and viewpoint images I've seen from there - I WOULDN'T have gone where you did! Gives me goosebumps just imagining from afar. Well done. No nits or suggestions.
