Common Alpine

I don't post here very often, but while in Montana doing my usual avian work, I took some time to get some images of butterflies. Hey, they have wings, so I felt I could stray at least a bit birds to another group of critters as long as they can fly.

The common alpine as nice enough to cooperate with me. Taken in a patch of wildflowers on the side of a mountain.

Wow, I LOVE the background on this! Nicely blurred, but still showing the natural structure of the habitat. That, combined with the flowers and lovely composition make this a pleasure to view. That's another Nymphalid I have never seen. (Gotta travel more.) Thanks for the ID (for some strange reason, the macro gallery seems to be the only one where many posters don't bother to tell us what they are shooting -- really odd for a Nature photo site eh?)

First we get Yiming visiting and posting here from landscape, and now you from avian. Our lucky day at the macro gallery. :jump: I am pleased you shared this image here as it is a beauty. Very nice capture via use of your long lens, which goes to show there's more than one way to skin a cat. The image really captures summer in the meadow. My only suggestion would be to crop some of the top down to close to the tip of the grass blade. Although the BG is excellent, I personally think the image would be stronger with a little less empty space at the top. :toast:

Scott and Wayne, thanks for your comments. I agree, there is more than one way to get close-up images. They all have advantages and disadvantages. I love the BG you get with the longer lenses and the fact you don't have to get so close to sometimes skittish subjects. However, getting these small subjects tack sharp and enough DOF on the subject is tough with a long lens. I am toying with getting a really good 200mm macro to see how that works. What would be your suggestion for a great Canon macro lens?
