Sage & Sand

by John Mumaw

Gallery: LandscapePosted July 16, 2012608 views26 comments
Cloud cover and rain showers kept me from my destination last weekend, but sometimes the journey itself really is better.
I spotted this sagebrush remnant in the wet sand just outside of Page, AZ.and was immediately compelled to capture it.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

I think this is superb. Beautiful lines, texture, composition. I don't have any suggestions except to be sure to frame it.

A superb and bold comp. Love the form and the texture very much. Some of the highlight seem clipped slightly, perhaps because of web compression or sharpening?

Man, I'm loving this!! Such a great find, and you made the most of it. I agree with Yiming on the clipping, but that's easily repaired. This is exquisite John!

I really like the diagonals and the contrast you've brought to the monochrome presentation. The desert can sure do some strange and wonderful things to plants.

I think it's interesting that in a place of blowing sand that creates these ripples that no sand has blown against the sagebrush remnant or is trailing from it as would be expected. Seems like the sand is affected by the wind but the sagebrush is somehow transparent to it and doesn't seem to interrupt its flow. Wonder why this is

No suggestions, just admiration. This is stunning. Twisted sage and textured sand are perfect together

A wonderful B&W composition, the sage really stands out well and I like the slight tint to add something extra, way to go, excellent shot.

I like the contrast between the gnarled contours of the sage and the more linear lines in the sand. The contrasting textures also hold a lot of interest.

John,

Unique and beautiful. I just love the tonality here and the opposing diagonals make for a dynamic composition. Great find and even better processing/presentation.
