Taken in my backyard yesterday. Nikon D300s, 300mm 2.8 lens, ISO 640, f5.6, 1/2500. I rarely up the ISO on my camera because I get noise with even a small increase but yesterday I thought I would give it a try and for some reason I do not see a lot of noise in this image. I did not use on noise reduction.

Thanks for looking and critiques appreciated.

May

Beautiful! Great pose and that perch with the lichen is excellent. Very complimentary colours throughout.

Good pose and perch. May, I have the 300s also, and I regularly shoot between 400 and 800 ISO for avian shots. With correct exposure and appropriate light, noise has never been a significant factor. I have (rarely) gone as high as 1250 ISO before seeing noticeable noise.

Excellent elements all through this image, May. Love the hopping pose. I find the perch in front of the sparrow a bit sharper than the sparrow itself.

A nice image as presented.

I keep my D300 at ISO 400 as much as possible but I don't hesitate to go to ISO 800 when the light is very low, and I've ecen found ISO 1600 to be usable as you can see in this Hermit Thrush post I made here. As Phil says the noise isn't an issue if you are careful to give a generous exposure (without blowing the highlights, of course).

Hi May. It looks good. I really like the perch too. Have you tried and noise reduction software such as NIK Define? It would take care of the little BG noise we do see here in the Large version.

Nice action May. Love the perch branch. Nice exposure too. A bit of noise in the BG, but nothing bad enough to worry about.

Sandy they say that the noise at 640 is less than at 400

They? Who would that be? Where was this said? About what camera? Why should we believe such a claim? Did "they" show any evidence? Did "they" offer an explanation?
