Cock-of-the-Rock (F)

During my Peru trip I was really hoping to get some good views of the Andean cock-of-the-rock, Peru's national bird. Fortunately, my hopes were realized. Unfortunately, the much more colorful males were somewhat shy. It was the rusty-colored females that showed more curiosity and flashed into the open once or twice close to my position along the highway where we stopped to look for them. Nonetheless, the females themselves are still rather striking, and the birds are much larger than I expected (pigeon-sized or larger).

Canon 5D Mark II
Canon 500mm f/4 IS + 1.4x TC
ISO 800
1/60th - No flash (was probably recycling, because I have others from this sequence with flash... so this is a pretty good result!)
f/5.6

I agree this is a 'pretty good result'. I like the pose, sharpness is great, eye detail is fine. BG supports the bird very well. I like the detail in the feathers and the colors. Now, if it was just the male!! Thanks for sharing.

 Noooooooo, you didn't get this...... we tracked them for hours and got only the quickest glimpse of red thru the trees..
Excellent shot and great colours. You might darken the bright areas a little, as they are a bit distracting.

Congrats on getting this species, Max. The bird is very sharp for the SS. I really like the pose, head-turn and the eye. Great perch too! Second Sandy's suggestion on toning down the background. Would also like to see a larger version. :toast:

Well, I'd be more than happy with this female  - wonderful shot in all respects and nice to see the bird free from the BG which is so hard in surroundings... Big thumbs up from Holland ! Cheers, Hans

Thanks for the feedback. I was pleased with the variety of birds I saw during the trip, but it seemed like a relatively small percentage were this cooperative (even for a mere instant) at this range. It's certainly not an encounter I'm taking for granted.
