Gruinard Bay Abstract

by Eva McDermott

Gallery: LandscapePosted June 14, 2012907 views28 comments
Gruinard Bay, Laide, Scotland

Large scale abstract of Gruinard Bay at low tide. The turquoise waters and sand patterns were absolutely breathtaking. It could be somewhere in the Caribbean...... except for the cold, stiff wind. Taken from a high view point on a 1-2-1 workshop with Ian Cameron.

Canon 5DM2
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L at 130mm
ISO100 1/40sec f/11
1.5 Stop ND Gradient

Thanks for having a look. Comments and critiques welcome.

This is fantastic. I really like the shapes and colors on the shore, and obviously the water color is gorgeous.

Beautiful. I might consider a top crop, which puts a more emphasis on the turquoise (bright lines pull the eye a bit), but looks real sweet as presented.

Luscious colours and textures. Are you still churning these out from that one trip? If so, your yield is remarkable.

Hi Kah Kit - Thank you. This is trip #2 which I just got back from this past weekend The first one was last September to Lewis and Harris. Amazing weather and great light almost constantly this last trip to Caithness and Sutherland also with Ian C.

Thanks all for your wonderful comments.

Ian - I am sure your Velvia "trannies" are going to accentuate those subtle greens and turquoise tones. Can't wait to see your results. I am sorry I did not take any film images at this stunning location. BTW - My film just showed up at the lab today so it won't be until sometime early next week when I'll see my "trannies". Torcher I say.

This is a fascinating abstract with interesting textures and contours throughout. I like the fact that it is difficult to tell the scale if you hadn't mentioned it. The color of that water is remarkable.

This is without a doubt, an absolutely stunning image, Eva. The delicacy of the tonal transitions as well as the details along with your superb composition, not to mention the design, make this simply fantastic. For me, this is fine art photography at its best. Amazing.

This is beautiful, for the colors and lines, and for the general softness of it all. Lovely!

I thought this was a glacier looking at the thumbnail. Beautiful. I can make out many tighter intimates of the sand as well. That water is a stunner. No suggestions, just soothing to look at.

The colors look more like something from the Carribean, Eva. Marvelous color and the soft light lets it all come through. I also like your comp with the diagonals and the amorhpous patterns in the sand. Just beautiful.

My thoughts have all been said above. Only nit would be that the brightness of the upper two sand bars pulls my eyes up. Way cool to look at.

Lovely abstract and yes, the water is so gorgeous, but I really love the lines of the water shaping those soft, muted sands. Beautiful work! :toast:

Super shot Eva...in my opinion, one of the best on the front page currently. The colours, tones and natural patterns are heavenly.
