I just obtained a macro lens and I'm new to the sport. Any comments would be appreciated.

Good detail on the grasshopper and the stamen and pistil of the hibiscus. I would suggest a shallower DOF to minimize the distracting BG.

Hi Scott. I like the subject and comp very much. The green grasshopper perched on the hibiscus scores very high on the cute scale. The colors are excellent, and I think the medium fstop worked well for the subject and background. I do find something a pinch off in the processing in that the image shows a lot of noise and the sharpness looks a little off, like maybe this was oversharpened. I suspect something occurred when resizing this for the web. Thanks for sharing.

I would've come in a bit closer, and positioned the hopper using the rule of thirds for this comp.
Under 1/60th shutter I would use mirror lock-up as well, especially since your using tripod here.
Use manual focus as much as you can, don't rely on your AF..You don't say what ISO?
I like the overall scene with the subject perched on the stamen this way, colorful frame :wavey:

I think the subject matter here is very good. Some good suggestions have already been made on how to improve the image.
