Sucker Brook + Repost

This is Sucker Brook in the Adirondacks on a rainy evening. The moss covered rocks kind of reminded me of the shots I see every spring from the Columbia River Gorge.

Had to compress this one quite a bit to fit within NPN's size constraints, so please have a look at the LARGER version! Thanks for looking and for any comments you may have.

Very well done. 1.3 sec at ISO 320 indicates a very low light level. My only small (very small) nit is the white blown sky showing in top center.t

Great shot Zack, I am really drawn into the weave of greens and browns through the fg and mg. I dont really notice the sky, but the bright spots on the three rocks on the lhs catch my eye - maybe toning down that a bit may even out the light through the middle?

Belongs in a fairy tale. Really nice glow and color. The square format works well for your comp.

Definitely a beautiful spot. I really like how the stream winds through the foreground and those lovely moss covered boulders. I too find the very brightest sky a bit distracting, but that's a minor nit on a beautiful scene.

Very nice image Zack. The moss covered rocks sure do look like the Columbia River Gorge. I'd consider cropping or toning down the bright sky at the very top of the image. Otherwise, this looks great.

Hi Zack, This is so pretty! I love the feel of this very inviting place. Excellent work with your comp, great light and color too! I guess I could see toning down the bright sky too, or cropping it out stills seems to work well with your comp. What a great looking place and you captured it with a wonderful mood. Nice work, Zack.

I love the mood you created here. You did a goob job composing this scene and the colors look great. The bright sky at the top doesn't bother me much and it looks natural but you might tone it down a bit.

Zack,

Adirondacks? Nah.... it's the Gorge, really... Beautiful scene. I really like the comp and the balance between the moss covered boulders and the forest. Personally, I think the contrast is a bit heavy; mostly brought on by the polarizer of course. Most of the time I don't care and I'm not looking for detail in those smaller shadow areas, but they added up space wise and accumulate to where much of the bottom part of the scene is just black. The good news... I'm still able to enjoy this beautiful scene very much, I'm just being picky. ;-)

I'm definitely enjoying this scene very much. The colors and comp are well done. There's an abundance of detail to look at, but in no way would I say this was 'busy'. Nicely captured. I would comment, that the bright spot could be toned down a bit, as well as some of the highlights on the rocks. BTW, the large version displays everything quite well. TFS!

I find these type of shots (stream in the woods) hard to pull off but you have done very well. I agree about toning down the highlights on the rocks a little but that little bit of sky is fine for me.

This is the kind of place I expect to find wood nymphs. Lovely, lush scene and comp, but I also agree on toning down the bright spot at top center. :toast:

What a great scene Zach. I think the square comp works well. The brightness to the sky....I say leave it. Nature has bright spots, what do ya do. This is not too distracting for me due to the diffusion around it. I will say however that if I had to make a suggestion, it would be to lighten up the darks a bit, they are a bit blocky. Great shot! :toast:

Wonderful, lush, quiet image, Zack. Love your composition and the use of the square format. The arrangement of the boulders in the foreground couldn't be better, and how the leaning tree in the upper right adds to the movement of the stream and your whole composition is quite remarkable.. The bit of sky poking through is slightly distracting but not a deal breaker. Interesting name for a creek; must be story behind the name I would image.

Based on all the wonderful comments and suggestions I've received so far I decided to do a rework of this with the sky and bright spots on the rocks toned down. I've also lifted the shadows just a bit. Does this look better?

I think the repost is an improvement - I might take the top bright area down even more. I know in the Whites, there are river rocks that have been stripped of moss on the top from people walking on them - usually hindering photo ops in places. I'm wondering if these rocks have had similar issues. The lack of moss is suspect. That's how I can tell it isn't The Gorge  Great detail in the larger version.

Very nice forest image. The repost definitely looks much better. I felt the original too dark in the shadows and the water, although on the web it's difficult to judge it. I'm courious why the 4 image stiched? Which lens you used?

Thanks everyone for all the wonderful comments!

Shantikara: I used my 17-70mm 2.8, the reason for the stitch is because I could not fit this entire scene within the 17mm focal length.
