Tricolored heron

I photographed this tricolored heron at White Rock Lake in Dallas, TX. He was hunting along the shoreline. I would have liked a slightly lower angle but I couldn't get it without showing the shore which I didn't want to do because of all the washed up sticks, logs and vegetation.

D300s with 200-400 and TC 14 and monopod

If you'd been lower Robert, you wouldn't have gotten that nice view of the wings and all of the feather detail. Under the wing is a very interesting light pattern which I guess is from light passing through the wing feathers at just the right angle. Even picked up in the reflection. Great colors, a nice action pose, and a perfect DOF gets everything in focus.
