Grand Prismatic Spring in the Midway Geyser Basin

I was in Yellowstone NP the third week in May when there were relatively few other visitors. I had this magical place to myself on a cold May evening.

The cold temperature and strong wind blowing toward me gave me some nice action from the vapor.

Nikon D700; Nikkor 24-85 @24; 0.8s -0.67; @f/16, ISO 200, tripod.

Comments and criticisms always welcome.

David,

Nice drama and movement with the steam - looks like it's blowing in more directions than toward you. I really like the reflected and naturally occurring colors in the extended pool. Personally, I think the cyan is pretty strong up top, but the color contrasts well between the top and the bottom. The only suggestion I have would be a crop up from the bottom. I think the darker bottom 20% or so isn't really adding much to the comp and I think the narrower presentation would help emphasize the wind-blown steam and you can still retain the nice pinks in the reflected areas too.

I can just imagine being there by oneself too.

Thanks so much for your suggestion, Lon. I agree the 20% crop up from the bottom makes a much stronger image.

Loved the larger version...the steam flow really makes a nice impact. I also agree on the crop, but beautiful shot overall. :toast:

Definitely catches the eye. I might try to darken the brights up top a bit more, and then desaturate the cyan a touch. Also agree the crop sounds promising.

Love the drama and light here. The composition is top-notch too and perfect in every manner.

Very well done, David.

I like the textures and light. Sort of wondering about pulling out some of the blue to reveal the warmer colors.

I agree, the vapor along the backside works very well David. Great look at this unique spring with its variations in color and reflections..Sounds like Lon has already made some great suggestions to make it even better...
Well done! :toast:
