Scary Eyes

We found the cocoon of this Polyphemus moth on our birch tree. We took it home. My daughter found it quite entertaining posing with it before letting it go.

Adults have only a week for mating as they do not have mouths. Thus the males have only a few days to find a mate by using their antennas, capturing a single female pheromone molecule from over a mile distance.

Thank you for your comments,
Andrey

Andrey, this does not fit the guidelines for Man and Nature. Please read the posting guidelines. I'll be moving to it to POP photos. Please contact me if you have any queries. I know some photos in the gallery don't strictly follow the rules either but this one is so very clearly belongs to POP I'll have to move it there.
