Wild Horse
by Ken Archer
Another photo from our time in the Malheur NWR area a few weeks ago. A couple of us spent an incredible afternoon with a large herd of Steen's Mountain wild horses. A distant thunderstorm was brewing and making for some intersting light situations.
Canon MkIV, 100-400mm @400mm, F8, 1/4000, ISO 800, Manual spot meter off white fur. I was using this higher ISO setting when the clouds came in, but when the sun popped through an opening in the clouds I didn't bother to change the ISO setting until after I made this photo, and then the horse moved and I didn't get a second chance. Normally I would use an ISO around 400 for this kind of light.
I appreciate all you comments and suggestions.

8 commentsI might tone down the brightest whites a fraction more
compositionally I wish the horse was on the RHS with the pose it's striking
Brings to mind the movie "Hidalgo" I recently watched for the first time.
That was one very cool mustang.. As is this!
Well done!
