Essence of Thistle

by Howard Cheek

I attempted to render the very "essence" of the common Texas Milk Thistle bloom here. I chose a mid-point in the blossom of the most "pollen" relevant spikes for my point of focus.
F/10, 1/320th, ISO 500, 1D M3, Sigma 150mm f/2.8 + Kenko 1.4x & natural light.

Howard: Haven't seen many thistles this year around our area but I think I better get out and look. Nice DOF choice and comp. >=))>

I like this a lot. For a plant that is so disliked it has a beautiful flower. Your composition is great and the dof is right on. Beautiful color.

You've captured this superbly Howard. Not just the POF/DOF already mentioned, but the choice of display from the corner is wonderful. Great work.

Howard - I like the "quadrant" composition using the left bottom corner for pivoting. The deep purple shoots really look awesome in a sea of pink. This variety of Thistle is not blooming here yet.

Howard:
Works fine. I have seen this in the herbal garden near me last year but I have not had time to go there this year (too pre-occupied with x-ray work).

Beautiful composition. I am very fond of thistles for their ability to attract a diverse and abundant crowd of pollinators. Your image certainly highlights the attractive aspect of this plant. Very nicely done.
