Allobates femoralis
by Andrius Pašukonis
My new research companion and the subject of my phD work striking a pose. I lately spent 10 weeks in French Guyana learning from these small charismatic frogs. This is a male Allobates femoralis (The brilliant-thighed poison frog) in his home territory. These boys show a very dedicated paternal care and transport their tadpoles from their territories to water points around the forest, sometimes hundreds of meters away. They appear to have an amazing orientation capability which allows them to find their way back to a tiny patch of the forest which they consider their territory.
