Black-necked stilt

Photographed at the Gilbert Riparian Preserve At Water Ranch in Arizona on March 1, 2012. Nikon D300, Nikkor 300mm f/4 ED-IF AF-S 1/1600s f/8.0 at 600.0mm iso400 with Nikon TC20EIII teleconverter.

I would have preferred a front-lit image, but this is all that I could get in the late afternoon.

Comments and critiques greatly appreciated.

Great pose here, too bad the lighting is so poor.
Adding some fill flash in photoshop might help a little.
Wishing you better light in the future..

A nice comp, but a bit too dark for my taste. Using fill flash in the field is really the only way to deal with this lighting situation IMO.

Great pose, Jay. Nice job handling the back-lit image.

What Sandy said. Sometimes you can get away with spot metering; looks like you were using an averaging algorithm.
