I have fiddled with this image so much that I have lost all objectivity. Please let me know if it should be trashed or if it is worth more work. Any processing ideas would be greatly appreciated. I will post the original raw image below so you can see where I started.

Carol, for me the spray between the horse/rider and the camera is too distracting. I would like to see this scene without the spray and and with the water just a bit darker. You have stopped the action well and it is nicely composed. thanks for sharing.

Please don't trash this image it has great potential. As already mentioned, if you could tame the look of the water spray on the horse and rider that would be a plus. Aside from that I might add a bit off saturation on the water.

I agree that the spray between the horse and the camera is a bit distracting. Though I also like that spray it's too dominant.

Carol, the processed version is a big improvement. For me there's emotional competition between the horse and rider hidden by spray, which is artistic and the rest of the scene, which is realistic. One thought is to crop to a vertical around the horse and rider and make it totally artistic. Another option might be to try black and white. It's a neat action capture.

Carol, equine photography resonates with me and really is one of my favorite past times. You timed this image quite well with the stride moving forward and the right diagonal pair in the air. The pseudo-silhouette with the water dots along with the shadowed reflection in the sand adds a somewhat artistic flavor. Of course, the lighting at this time of day challenges yet provides a romantic atmosphere to this image. A lovely time of day for a ride and opportunity for your image! ;-)
