House Sparrow (Passer domesticus)

Place: Water Ranch, Gilbert, AZ
Date: April 4, 2012 8:32 am
Equipment: Nikon D300, Nikkor AF-S 300/2.8 & TC20E III (2x), G1325, RRS BH-55, Sidekick
Exposure: Aperture priority spot metered, ISO 400, 1/100th @ f/8

Nothing glamorous, but I liked the Saguaro cactus nest cavity that this introduced species has stolen from the native woodpecker that made it.

A great comp Rich. Love these cactus. They have great character and apparently make good homes for many species of birds.

Extremely interesting, especially since I've never seen a bird in a cactus. Wonderful detail on the bird. The image seems so intimate, too. Very striking to me.

Hah, as you said, I think the cactus presence really helps make this special. Very nice.

Richard, I've never seen these sparrows using a saguaro for a nest site. Thank you for sharing this.

Nice! Great look at the habitat.

I Loved my time in Az in nesting season - seemed like every cactus cavity or tree hole had SOMEthing in it, making a home.

Good capture and well seen; I always enjoy seeing a common species in an uncommon position.

Nice design in this photo, the colors and organic shapes in the cactus are really interesting to study. Understated and very beautiful Richard. :toast:

Nice one Richard. I'd never figured the sparrow to be a house stealer.

Very cool. Nice detail on everything.

That's my setup, exactly, Richard. Sure need to practice my technique, as I don't get to shoot birds too often. Love it when I do, though.
