Canyon reds

Another "intimate" shot of the magnificent light and layers in the grand canyon. Wish the lower right wasn't so empty, but there was really nothing that held my interest composition wise except my last post. Comments and critiques appreciated. Large version included.

i like this peter. i don't have any problems with the lower right - in fact, i feel that it flows upwards in a very pleasing way. the light is gorgeous.

Thanks Stuart, I just feel there "should" be another butte in that corner, but the light was really what I was after anyways.

Peter, I do not mind the empty LR corner as it helps build the diagonals formed by the ridges. A few suggestions might be to move your black point about 6 pts, and increase the contrast just a tiny bit. The lighter rocks along the middle top edge catch my eye a little, so a minute crop would take care of that. I like the soft red light of dusk you caught here. This should make a nice print.

Beautiful light and you've emphasized the layers nicely. I like this subdued treatment of a magnificent location.

Thanks Doug and Nancy.

Doug, I did boost the contrast about 25 points in the raw and then 25 more points when opened up. I'll see about adding some more and moving the black points up. However, while playing with a few versions the darker and more contrasty edit lost the soft light and made the upper right reds too saturated and overpowering for the rest of the scene.

Beautiful, Peter. I really like this as it is. The light and colors are wonderful, not to mention the view. Nice work :toast:

I'm enjoying these Grand Canyon close-ups! Viewing them large is especially nice, looking at all the detail. IMO, your comps have been great, organizing all the cliffs and such into an arrangement that 'makes sense'. BTW, I don't think the lower right feels so empty. Sometimes, it seems, if there's an incredible amount of detail all throughout the scene, it may turn into an abstract (not always, of course). This seems to communicate a landscape, at that, a simple one. I like it a lot. TFS!

Very moody and unique image of the GC Peter. Kudos for seeing this. I think this works well as is but might bring up the highlights just ever so slightly to emphasize the beautiful color and light. Shadows look just right.

Love how you have focused on the forms of the canyon buttes and that gorgeous light gracing those landforms. The lower right isn't an issue in my opinion; your excellent composition works so very well. This really is one beautiful image.

Thanks Vance. It seems everyone doesn't mind the right corner, I guess mainly because I'm not used to this type of photography, so for me I don't know whats really a good composition. I don't mind the corner now after looking at it so many times.

The corner you mention doesn't detract at all Peter, the light and colour really make this shot. Really great detail in the larger version.

Gary.

Peter,

I love this! The large view is just beautiful. The late(early?) light gracing the canyon is warm and wonderful. No nits from me.

Works for me. Bottom right adds to the color/texture contrast.
Good eye and nice processing.
