Huemul

Huemul (South Andean Dear) is native to patagonia and is one of the few deer species that made to the temperate regions of the south. Once abundant, they are now endangered. I got to see this one on the Argentine side (Los Glaciares National Park, crossing the Rio Fitzroy at its headwaters) where they are not easily seen. There are only a few hundred left in Argentina and about twice that number in Chile.

Here is a link to another frame taken a few seconds earlier.

Nikon D5000, 70-300 @ 185mm, f7.1, 1/125, iso 320.

I am taking a break from the site for a few months. Hope to be back by the Northern fall. Till then, see you all.

Very nice setting for any animal, much less a rarity like this, Anand. I've seen one in Paine, but to find one near Fitz Roy is special.

Very nice photo! I like that you were able to capture it in such a natural setting. Good color, good detail. Thanks for sharing.

Actually, I like the "link" image best.

I like the image. How the deer is looking at you in this small island surrounded by this beautiful color water. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Anand,

This is a nice "enviroscape" type of shot. The subject cooperated nicely by giving you that head-turn (and, of course, positioning itself on that small "island" in the stream. Colours are very nice as well. When I look at the larger version the image looks a bit on the soft side (but still a very appealing scene).

Cheers...thanks for sharing this and look forward to seeing you back with us in a few month's time...

The rich colors and unusual setting make this a scene the eye enjoys studying!

Love the fairly tale like setting. The brightly colored trees have a very cool shape, like Japanese bonsai. I'm not sure if this is a crop but a bit more room at the bottom, assuming it is agreeable, might help the compositional balance. Very different deer photo, love it.
