Bright angel canyon

Another shot from the grand canyon. Every time I look at this canyon from the rim it reminds me of the movie tremors. Someday I'll make a hike down into the canyon, but for now I enjoy the views from the rim. Comments and critiques welcome. Large version included.

I really like the different tones and colors in this shot. They add to the feel a lot. The light is interesting and the darkness in the canyon contrasts nicely with the lighter tones on the rock faces. The comp is good and I like how the leading line pulls me in deeper. Nicely done!

Thank you Michael. The colors of the canyon are what draw me in while most people are drawn in by the sheer size. I enjoy both, but I always get goosebumps when the canyon transforms from the low angle of the sun. Something most people take for granted as proof that the zoo of people vanished right before sunset.

I agree with all Michael just said! I'm really enjoying this scene and the light you captured this in is wonderful. Really nice work Peter.

I like it the way it is, its not an image of the grand canyon as much as an image about tones and texture. Nicely done.

Well, you've inspired me to visit the Grand Canyon. Very fine shot, Peter. I like the composition, light, and colors very much. It manages to convey the subtle beauty of the location quite effectively.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Phil, everyone should visit the grand canyon once in their life. It is an incredible place if you can stay away from the crowds.

Magnificant...the comp and the terrific light and processed so well. This seems to draw the eye to wonder at the catastrophic gouging, river noise and clatter that rampaged through the center ...now silent, distant in time and space. One of the best G-canyon shots I've seen! Part of me wishfully wants this taken by an 8x10 so it could hang big....really big.

Thanks Ken! I really would have loved to shoot this with an 8x10. I can print this up to 24x36, but even then a larger version would look much nicer. There are a lot of nice details here.

I like the central canyon to bring the eyes into the image, soft light and subtle detail you brought from the shadows. I feel the right side points are a little cut off/short, so wonder if adding some to both sides would be possible. Sounds like you enjoyed your trip to the GC.

I like the perspective, lines lead an eye into the distance. The colors of the canyon are astonishing and well presented, although the red in upper red corner feels a bit oversaturated, less natural. Nice work.

Thanks Doug. I agree about the right side being a bit cut off, but the way I wanted to compose the image there was no way to compromise (I didn't think of a pano at the time). I'm sure on my next visit up there I will be able to rework a few scenes such as this one.

Thanks Harley and Vlad.

Vlad, the colors here are a pretty accurate representation of the scene. Even with the subtle light in the canyon, the upper ridges were glowing vibrant reds and I wanted to preserve that in the image. I can see in maybe one of the ridges taking the luminance down a bit.

I like how the blue/purples play with the warmer tones. A fine shot, Peter.

A very good GC shot. I like the centered composition, this works really well here. The dark center creates some interesting atmosphere. A fascinating view.

Nice. Almost and intimate view of the canyon, if there can be intimacy at this scale.

Thanks Tony and Zach.

Tony, I find it difficult to get truly "intimate" with the canyon because of it's scale. I often see everyone trying to catch the wide view of the canyon when many including myself have neglected to really study the intricate patterns and textures within the canyon. Definitely something new for me.
