April 8th 51 degrees here in Southeasten Minnesota, this butterfly or moth landed on a branch on one of our trees in the backyard to warm up a bit in the Sun. It is too early for this type of insect at these temps. His future is not bright since we are supposed to have a hard freeze the next couple of mornings. Very few flowers abound, a few daffodils and tulips, some flowering trees but that is it. a55, ISO 100 handheld because I had to be quick to get this shot.I do not know what the name of this Moth or Butterfly is. I have not observed this insect before in this area.Identification assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Comments are always welcome.

Sorry, I can't help with the ID. The background is a little busy, but the subject stands out well anyway. Very unusual for you to get this shot this time of the year. I've seen a few moths out and about already here in Ohio as well, but nothing this colorful.

I don't know the ID either, but I saw a couple of these at the arboretum yesterday here in northern Illinois. Nice details and comp in this image.
