Another View

Here is another view of Cedar Canyon. I am always looking for another way to present this area or a new way that I haven't seen it yet. This is early morning. The canyon is open to the southeast and it catches the morning sun very nicely. Things are starting to green a little. I am afraid that this is not going to be a very green photo season because it is starting out very dry, no moisture at all in March. All of your comments and critiques are welcome and appreciated.

I really like this, Richard. The foreground rock and cliffs are very attractive and the lighting adds a lot. I would be tempted to do an angled graduated lightening of the upper left, it feel dark to me.

Your usual fine renditon of this great little area. Comp is excellent and the early light is really nice. My only nit is with the sky which Mark mentioned which is probably a result of the polarizer on this wide angle shot. Polarizer has it's greatest effect at 90 deg. from the sun which would put it in that ULC. Has least affect directly down sun or in your URC. The brightness should be reversed with the lightest on the left near the sun and darker away. I have this problem too and I'm working on using less strength on the filter to see if that helps. Regardless, this is a very nice landscape of Cedar Canyon. I look forward to more photos from you of this place.

I agree with Mark and Peter about the sky. I'm sure the general public wouldn't notice it so much, but we as photographers recognize the strong polarization, and its placement with regard to the angle of light. I like the low light which adds a sense of drama, and the hint of clouds in the sky here. I do wish there was a bit more relation between the foreground rock and the background though. I get the feeling that they are a bit distant from eachother. I feel that stepping slightly to the left with a higher or lower vantage point might make them integrate a bit better, but not overlap visually. Also a bit more breathing room between the bottom of the rock and the bottom of the composition might make the foreground an even greater part of the composition. Did you by chance take a photo of this location after the sun had sent when the light was very warm and soft?

Ben,
This is a sunrise image. I am looking toward the west, the sunset colors would be to the back of the butte in this image and the butte would end up being very dark with no color.

Hi Richard, This is very nice and I really enjoy the view. Some wonderful light here. I agree with the others on the sky and also with Ben about just a bit more room on the bottom, but then we never really know what was there without being there. I'm pretty sure you made the best of it and it still looks very nice as is. I mentioned it before but still want to say that I have really enjoyed seeing your takes on this Cedar Canyon area. They make me want to visit this area! Keep them coming.

I love the light you capture in this canyon. It's always a treat to view your images from here. the ulc is a bit dark (as mentioned). The long shadows from rock and cobbles in the fg add dimension and energy to the comp. Very nice
