There are so many beautiful shots people have taken of hummingbirds that I have not been tempted to try it much myself. I am finding it IS enjoyable however! I appreciate any tips as I am sure this falls far short! Also because I am not using any flashes I am aware that I am getting a smaller DOF than is usually desirable.

natural lighting
ISO 800, f9, 1/2000
5D2@400 mm
C&C appreciated!

I think this is a very fine hummer shot. Nice composition. Background is very pleasing as well. Maybe a little more depth would be nice, but certainly not a show stopper for this image. A little more selective sharpening on the hummer may help. Nicely done!

Sweet little guy and I think you did well here. I find some of the best hummer shots were done with multiple flashes.

A hummingbird that's probably really looking forward to molting. Nice capture, nice background and even some iridescence. The multi-flash set-ups freeze the wings - or really, really bright sunlight - but with all respect to my friend Glenn, hummingbirds are all about motion and freezing them has never seemed right to me. Good work.

I agree with Jim, Eirini, I prefer this type of shot rather than the frozen multi-flash type.- well done

Nice shot. It looks to me like the critical focus was on the plant and not on the bird's eye. I like to shoot these birds without flash also. Seems like I get more shots as the birds don't like the flash. :toast:
